In January 2024 (as of January 17th), the National Medical Products Administration of China announced the filing of 8 new cosmetic ingredients. One of them is Fucosyllactose (No. 20240006), and the company filing it is Bloomage Biotech.

Before this, Bloomage Biotech had already filed 4 other new cosmetic ingredients, namely Zinc Hyaluronate Hydrolysate, N-Acetylneuraminic Acid, Hydrolyzed Calcium Hyaluronate, and Aminolevulinic Acid HCl.

About Fucosyllactose:

Fucosyllactose, also known as 2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL), is a disaccharide compound composed of fucosyl and lactose. Fucosyl is a polysaccharide naturally found in seaweed, fungi, and bacteria, and it possesses various biological activities such as moisturizing, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Lactose is a major sugar component in dairy products, which is broken down by lactase in the human body into glucose and galactose for absorption and utilization.

Application of 2'-FL in food:

Currently, 2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL) is approved for use in food in multiple countries and regions worldwide as a core component of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). For example, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved multiple forms of 2'-FL as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) substances. The application scope of 2'-FL includes infant formula milk powder, as well as various common food categories such as baked goods, dairy products, and beverages, with different usage requirements depending on the reporting unit.

On October 8th, 2023, the China National Health Commission issued an announcement approving 2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL) derived from Escherichia coli K-12 DH1 MDO, Escherichia coli K-12 MG1655, and Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). It can be used as a food nutrient fortifier in the preparation of milk powder (only for children's milk powder), infant formula food, larger infants and toddler formula food, and specialized medical use infant formula food. There is currently high interest in 2'-FL, and related applications are continuously being accepted.

However, the application of 2'-FL in Chinese cosmetics is still relatively unknown or unexplored. Bloomage Biotech's filing of 2'-FL as a cosmetic ingredient marks the first of its kind in China, presenting new possibilities for its application in the Chinese cosmetics market.
